One person was found dead Monday following a fire at a multi-family home in New Bedford.
New Bedford Fire Chief Scott Kruger said crews encountered heavy fire on the first floor and extending to the second floor.
Some of the residents were already outside, but there were still two people trapped inside the home. The Ladder 4 crew was able to rescue one person from the second floor, but the other was found dead on the first floor after an “aggressive search"
“It’s a tough situation. Our sympathies go out to the family of the deceased tenant. The fire chaplain’s on scene. He's spent time with them,” Kruger told WPRI.
Four residents were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation and other injuries. No firefighters were hurt.
The cause remains under investigation.
